I'm kind of tired of seeing MMOs as it is -- so many of them are such tremendous time-sinks while being rather poor as games.
And this is shaping up to be one of the least impressive one as of late.

Most MMOs have rubbish gameplay to the point where I can't imagine anyone playing them without the social aspects.
From what little we know of this game so far, seems they've stripped out all that makes it Elder Scrolls, but the title and lore.

I'd rather see the money and energy put into making more DLC and things for Skyrim, or hell, even making a new series. Or a new Elder Scrolls if they aren't feeling totally creative.

Well, this is being made by a totally different team than the Bethesda making the Elder Scrolls and Fallout games. The only involvement they have is on the lore.
So putting them on making another Elder Scrolls probably wouldn't yield any better results than the MMO regardless.
I guess we can chalk it up to the usual publisher nonsense.

Main story of Elder Scrolls Online to be "100% solo". I trust that doesn't mean you wont be able to group up with friends.

Here's an interesting article that sort of explains why a MMO seems a weird choice for the Elder Scrolls series.

Bit of talk on the MMO:
I hate it when designers say that sort of crap. I do not want every fight to be a challenge. And as I recall, that was the majour complaint about Oblivion's unmodded difficulty system: it got to a point where everything was tough, even the most mundane fight. It made the game tedious to play at higher levels when even the lowliest bandit was a bitter fight to the death.“We want monsters to be a challenge to the player every single time you fight them, not a speedbump for the player. We don’t want fighting monsters to be boring or you can eat a sandwich or do five other things while fighting a monster...”
Challenge can be rewarding, but when everything is a challenge it becomes tedious.
